This reflects what I read from 2009 – 2022.
I have given each book a star rating on a 5-point scale. Five stars means I think most people would benefit from reading it. It does not necessarily mean I agree with it.
Also, due to my newfound love of reading banned or politically incorrect books, this bibliography no longer includes everything I read. I would be happy to tell you all about these books in person should you visit me at my farm in Nicaragua.

The first thing I think of when I consider doing anything serious is: I've got to get some book on the subject and learn everything I can. My fiance and I are planning to have children, so I'm planning on spending the next year learning all about baby making and baby raising. I went online to see what literature had been written that might help me answer the ton of questions that were starting to bubble up in my brain, And I found you. I won't have to look much further for a reading list about parenting.
ReplyDeleteWhen I started putting together my reading list in preparation for having my first child, the first thing that came to mind was the What to Expect when You're Expecting book. I did a pretty thorough scan of your bibliogohy here and I didn't see this book in your list. So, I'm thinking : what's up with that, did I not see it or is it not on the list?
Anyway, thanks so much for putting this list together! I went online looking for something that would be helpful and I found this which is more than I had hoped for.
I've ordered The Baby Decision and the Traditions Cookbook.
I have one other question. You give the Traditional Cookbook a four start rating in your bibliography, but you make it one of your nine recommended books for people thinking about having a baby. Why is that?
Thanks,
Madeleine
Hi Madeleine, That is so great to hear! Have you seen this post?
Deletehttp://roslynross.blogspot.com/2013/01/reading-recommendations.html
The last section at the bottom is the top 5 books I would recommend to someone thinking about having a baby.
I did read What to Expect When You Are Expecting ... I will update my bibliography! I don't recommend it. I think it made me a stressed out hypochondriac. I think women would enjoy their pregnancies more if they read the five books I listed and skipped that one.
That being said, I can't imagine myself *not* reading it or something like it. Today women just get pregnancy aps that send them little weekly updates with all the things they should be afraid of going wrong this week. It might be unavoidable in our current fear-culture. I also read a similar book called Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn, which I thought was a little better than What to Expect.
The Traditional Cookbook is essential for the nutrition information, to raise a healthy baby. Unfortunately, a large chunk of that book is not about nutrition but rather parenting advice. Fallon might be an expert on nutrition, but she is not an expert on parenting! Her parenting advice is terrible! Because the nutrition advice is so essential, it's one of the most important books to read. Because Fallon oversteps her expertise (nutrtion expert, not child psyc expert) she gets 4 stars.
Roslyn
Thanks for the information.
ReplyDeleteI actually did pick up the four edition of What to Expect before I realized there was a fifth edition. So of course I had to get the fifth edition if I wanted my child to be top notch. And then I discovered that there was a What to Expect Before you're Expecting. I though it was a little unusual that there should be so much fuss made about such a natural process, but I bought them all anyways. Silly, I realize now.
I started reading the books and got advice like "don't smoke cigarettes or meth... But if you do happen to smoke cigarettes or meth before you realize you're pregnant dont worry about it too much, your baby is probably fine."
I realized the books had little value in the way of advice, so I ditched them.
I found the traditions cook book helpful, and now Im convinced I need to raise my own dairy cow, pronto. I think this is a more reasonable thing to be concerned with than being sure that my husband and I both get genetically tested before trying to conceive.
How you desceibe pregnancy apps is hilarious.
Madeleine
Lol! Well done on realizing they were terrible and ditching them! Did you try Baby Catcher? I think that is the best "information" about pregnancy that women need to have a successful birth. Hypnobirthing and Ina Mae Gaskins books made me want to shoot myself, but the psychological aspects of "welcoming the pain" are essential if having a fast, complication free birth is your goal.
DeleteI also dream of having my own dairy cow! (And actually plan to have one this year!) There is a great book on cows called Keeping the Family Cow. Highly recommended.
Roslyn
Thanks so much for your recommendations, and your really excellent blog!
ReplyDeleteI will look into both books.
Madeleine
Wow, amazing you have read all those... it is no wonder you sound so intelligent when you speak! You had me at Thunderbolts Project! I'm checking out the "Religion in the Viking Age" now... if you ever get a chance to see the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, I think you would love it, as they have tons of history, and also the Skansen House and Farmstead Museum, which is right next door...they have live craftsmen blowing glass and other trades... and if you are doing all that, I guess you may as well also take a short boat trip to Birka, which is one of the oldest trading centers in Scandinavia... mostly just artifacts now.. my friends live only 15 miles from there.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the list!
Ray
I have been to the Vasa museum in Stockholm! And the viking museum in Oslo too. I did not make it to Birka which I really want to do. We actually have visiting Liberstad (in Norway) on our list of things we may do this summer and if we do that we will definitely do the museums over again so Anders can see them. Liberstad doesn't exist yet, but we wanted to meet the people trying to start it.
DeleteGlad you enjoyed the list! I am going to publish a new version soon that lists books by subject. That will make it easier for me to give recommendations.
Roslyn
Oh, and thanks for recommending The Thunderbolts Project! :)
DeleteWow, I had not heard of Liberstad! "Liberstad will be free from mandatory taxes and fees and you do not need permission to start a business."; I wonder how they are doing that in such a socialist nation... exciting!
