Bibliography by Subject - READING RECOMMENDATIONS!

Bibliography by Subject - READING RECOMMENDATIONS!

Here is a second version of my bibliography that will be more useful for reading recommendations.

*This list was last updated Jan 2023

KEY

Books in red are what I consider to be the most important books in each category.

Books in blue highly recommend.

Books in light blue I recommend with reservations or I recommend, but they are just not as important as the books in the other blue or red.

Books in gray I have rated as 1-star for being incorrect, irrational or just bad.

A Reader Asks: Do I Make Enough Money To Have Kids?

I recently received a message on Facebook from a couple that are interested in having children, but are worried that they don't make enough for the woman to be a full-time mom, and they were curious what I spend on Anders.

Before I share what I spend on Anders, here are some things that I know:

1) There is a wealth of information about this on the internet that can be Googled. There are even cost calculators that you can do by geographic area. Assume that your costs will be higher than those listed if you will not be feeding your child fake food. Also, cheap plastic diapers and wipes gave Anders diaper rash, so we used the Seventh Generation brand which is much more expensive. We used plastic diapers when we were out. We used cloth diapers at home, but I did not wash them myself, I had a diaper service. You could save money by using cloth diapers and washcloths and washing them yourself. Also, I was never willing to use the cheapest childcare available for Anders (daycares), so my child care costs (high quality babysitters) were always higher than what the websites list as well.

2) I read that parents spend about 33% of their expendable income on their first kid. If they have a second child that number goes up to 41%. If they have a third child that number goes to 47% and after that it stays around there, just under 50% regardless of how many children the couple has.

So my first thought is: Do you have expendable income?

Note that at my house, one cannot say, "No." Because my husband worked minimum wage jobs for ten years and during that time lived on just 20% of his income. No joke. So literally no one can tell him that they "can't save."

Now, what my husband did, I do not think most people are capable of doing. The sacrifices he made blow my mind. He parked miles from venues but never once paid for parking until he was over thirty years old. He periodically slept in his car for a few months to save on rent. He shared a studio apt with three other people. He couch surfed for years while working and saving. He worked as a bus boy at a restaurant and only ate the free food from there. The only food he was willing to pay for was Ramen noodles and cans of tuna fish. He drove a car with no a/c and a busted window in Los Angeles for over half a decade. He did not go out to eat or to movies - ever. He did not pay for books or movies, he only rented from the library. Stuff like that.

If you have a dream and you can make these sacrifices for it, even working minimum wage jobs, you can save. So, regardless of how much you make, what is your savings rate? Assume that 30% of your income needs to go to your child and another 10% needs to be saved each year, can you live on 60% of your income?

Surprise! If you were married to my husband, saving 10% would not fly. He would say you should save a minimum of 30%. Assume you will spend 30% on the child and save 30%. Can you live on 40% of your income? Start experimenting now to see. How does it feel to make those sacrifices? Because if you are not happy to do it now, when you are getting enough sleep, you will feel much less happy about doing it when you are a bleary-eyed, sleep-deprived parent.

If you are going to have a child you should definitely have six months of income stashed in a savings account for emergencies. If you are Mormon, you have to have an entire year. Do you have that?

3) Another thing I know is that, from the book, The Price of Motherhood, if the woman makes less than 50k a year, it is a better financial decision for her to stay home than it is for her to work. This is because the costs of childcare and taxes negate the entire worth of the woman's salary if it is below 50k. If you haven't read that book, I recommend it.

4) For Tom and me, our highest value is health. I would consider it cruel to have a child that I couldn't afford to feed a nutritionally-dense diet. Can you afford to feed your child real, chemical-free food? If not, start making friends with local organic farmers.

Also, remember that you need to prepare your body for two years before you have the child to maximize the DNA you pass on (this is from what I have read about epigenetics). Have you been doing that? Have you read about the pregnancy-prep diet in Nourishing Traditions?

5) Tom and I take pride in our family being "hard to kill." Are you prepared for black swan emergencies? Do you have a gun and know how to use it, gold and silver coins, medical supplies, batteries, and two months of stored water and food and a way to cook that food if there is no power? If you live in a cold climate and the power is out, how will you heat your home? Do you have a wood stove and two months of back up wood? *Assume it is not safe to leave your home for two months and figure out how you will survive. If you are Mormon, assume a year. (I really respect the Mormons in this area!)

In addition, have you taken an EMT class? Not CPR, that is basically useless, EMT. Have you studied a martial art, hopefully krav maga so that you can protect your family if there is ever an emergency?

Remember that children cost a lot more in time than they do in money. Assume that your family will now be your hobby. After work, are you happy to skip your favorite activity or show/video game and instead go to krav maga for your family? For the next year, experiment with having no down time. Instead, spend your free time on your unborn child – working extra to get the emergency food stash, money, and skills you need for your family to be hard to kill. How does that feel? Are you happy to be a king instead of a squire? If not, you will most likely not enjoy having a family. (The king/squire comment is referencing this post. If you have not read it, I recommend it: http://roslynross.blogspot.com/2016/07/living-right-story-parents-as-kings-and.html)

6) Finally, what do I spend on Anders every year? I don't have the info with me for the first few years, but in both 2015 and 2016 we spent about 18.5k, not including food or plane tickets. Here is the breakdown:

2015 (Anders was 3)

$10k on childcare
$5k on classes, camps, experiences, books, and toys. (We buy almost no toys, opting instead for experiences and camps.)
$100 on haircuts
$2.5k on health, this includes insurance (catastrophic coverage only), and dental apts. Keep in mind dental costs would be a lot higher if we agreed to fill his cavities. And medical costs would be higher if we went to the doctor for "checkups."
$900 on clothes

2016 (Anders was 4)

$4k on childcare
$11k on classes, camps, experiences, books, and toys.
$150 on haircuts
$2.5k on health, this includes insurance (catastrophic coverage only), and dental apts.
$1k on clothes

Food costs an additional $1k per month if we are feeding Anders in Los Angeles and an additional $200 a month if we are feeding him in Nicaragua.

Thoughts:

-Where you live matters the most. If you live in Nicaragua and make 30k, you are rich. Like, maid, cook, driver rich. If you make 200k in Los Angeles, you still can't afford those things.

-There are ways to do kids for a lot less than what I spend, of course. If you have a social network that you can rely on for hand-me-downs, that can save you money. Goodwill is a great option, but it's a big time investment. If you get the plastic tubs now and start hitting the store once a week, you could have a good collection of clothes two years from now when you need them. It doesn't work to go there when you need the clothes, as you will leave with only one or two items each time you go.

-If you have relatives nearby that would babysit once a week for a full day, that would help significantly. You will need time off. After Anders was a newborn, Tom and I got zero help from our families. Many families try to do without time off. I think that, except for a select few, this doesn't work. I think planning to have no time off is basically planning to end up divorced.

-When Anders was younger we didn't go to any classes (except for his RIE baby class), so I imagine those costs were negligible. There are free classes offered at libraries and through homeschooling networks that I know are available, but in general I found them to be not what I was looking for. I think that if Tom and I had a stronger social network (which would require being more mainstream) they might have been.

-I don't think kids need their own rooms until they are much older. So one way to save money is to plan on sharing a room with your child until he/she really wants one of his/her own.

-I do think it's important for you to think about what will keep your family together. Because if you don't plan for it, your family will most likely disperse and then – what was the point of having kids? This means: Are you in a city near your own family? Are you in a city you could live in for the rest of your life? Are you in a city you would be proud to have your child live in for the rest of his/her life? Are you in a line of work that you can share with your child? Start thinking now about how you will involve your child in your work life. Start thinking now about your grandchildren and great grandchildren. Have you read The Little House books? They were poor, and they had a happy family life. But the children were malnourished and unable to produce viable offspring. For me, that is a big fail. They would have been better off limiting themselves to one child. Or staying in the big woods where they had the support of their families. Either way, the point is to start thinking long-term. Most people think that if the children survive to adulthood, the parents were successful. I disagree. I think the children must survive to adulthood and be better off physically, emotionally, and financially for the parenting to be deemed successful. (Note that I am not suggesting parents should be perfect, just that they should think realistically and long-term about their abilities to do better in all three areas than their own parents did.)

-Tom and I would save quite a bit of money if I would stop writing this blog, and instead spend my free time growing veggies, preserving food, taking Anders on hunting and fishing trips, and learning how to make our clothes and do basic home repairs. I recommend saving money by not starting a blog! :)

-If you can get your hands on The Baby Decision by Merle Bombardieri, I highly recommend it. And one of those books along the lines of 100 Questions to ask before getting married. I do not agree that love is enough. (I think one should breed primarily with one's head, not one's heart.) Values and long term plans should be addressed before the long term commitment is made.

-And finally, if you don't do any of these things that I recommend, and you decide to be what I would call "irresponsible," remember that because you read this blog you will probably still be better than 99.9% of the parents out there.

I give you sooooooo many point just for even considering these things before having kids!

Book Review - The Lifeways of Hunter Gatherers

Robert Kelly's book, The Lifeways of Hunter Gatherers: The Foraging Spectrum, attempts to answer a question I have been seeking an answer to for a long time: What is the actual ORIGIN of political order? Or as this book correctly calls it – hierarchy. Mobile hunter gatherers are almost always hard-core egalitarians. When and why did that change? Who was the first person to accept inequality and why on Earth did he?

The author postulates that there are four things that had to be in place for a society to morph from people who are disgusted by status-seeking behavior to people who live in social hierarchies with political dominance, inequality and hereditary leadership.

1) Sedentism: People choose to settle when there is an abundant renewable resource, and they don't need to move, like a river with a consistent supply of fish.

2) A controllable resource: Like a bend in a river with a great fishing spot that the tribe can guard.

3) A resource that must be controlled: If the tribe follows their hunter-gatherer ethos of allowing anyone to come fish as much as they like, they themselves would starve, so they MUST control the resource.

This is how the first lower class of people happened. Group A has maximized the amount of people that can live happily around this one fishing hole. Group B suffers some calamity and comes seeking food from group A. In order to motivate group A to share, B offers to gives half of what they catch back to group A. Group B is paying taxes. And group A doesn't have to work as hard as they used to. Suddenly inequality exists.

And finally, the most interesting factor and the reason I am posting this:

4) Child spacing: Mobile hunter gatherers space their children around five years apart, sedentary peoples tend to have children every two years. When this change happens, the group ethos change because children get less attention from their parents, especially their fathers, and are raised largely by their siblings rather than a community.

In mobile groups there is rarely more than one person of every age, so there is little competition between children. (When a two-year-old is going through his "mine" phase, he can be completely indulged because there are no other two-year-olds to fight with.) When a mom has two kids under the age of five, personalities shift and become more competitive and also less egalitarian. I have long thought there was a self-esteem issue in status-seeking behavior as well. It makes sense that children who get all of their parents attention until they are five have a lot higher self-esteem than children who must share their mom with other kids.

That children spaced closer together behave differently is not new information. Weston A Price said the same thing but believed the factors were nutrition related. He believed that close child spacing means the mother doesn't have enough nutrients to pass onto each child (except the first born) and this contributes to genetically-caused differences in personality because nutritionally stressed-out fetuses tend to be stressed-out, competitive people.

But regardless of the different possible reasons why, research has shown that children spaced closely together exhibit a different kind of personality. It follows that they would grow up to create a different kind of society.

So how can we create a more equal world, a world in which people are less interested in status-seeking and competition, and have higher self-esteem:

-We can space our children five years apart.

-We can not put our children into schools where they spend all day with people of the same age, therefore heightening competition as a personality attribute. We could also go smaller. Neighborhood one-room schoolhouses that accommodate a variety of ages instead of the giant factory conglomerations we have now.

-We can continue to create a society that is as highly mobile as possible. The easier it is for people to move to different locations, the less any one location can suck (because then everyone would move). This is a political issue – get rid of borders and big governments, so each area can be what it wants to be, and populations will vote with their feet, just like hunter-gatherers did.

Two last notes:

I liked how this book explained why men hunt and women gather. Women nursed for five years, so they could only do things that they could do WITH their children. Hunting is not something one can do with children, so the men hunted. The women gathered – which was something they could do with their kids.

-Hunter gatherers consider a man and a woman with two children incapable of surviving on their own without help. I think this is still true today.

Things Sarah Got Right and Wrong: The First 4.5 & 1.5 Years

A reader, Sarah, was kind enough to add her experience to the exercise I did on the first five years! In case you haven't seen that post, here is a link:
http://roslynross.blogspot.com/2016/11/things-i-got-right-and-wrong-first-five.html

She wrote:

I have used your hypothesis as I had none of my own before having children. I was rather naive and just followed the advice from brief readings on attachment parenting.

I have a 4 1/2 year old son and a 1 1/2 year old daughter. I only learnt of RIE when my son was 2 1/2. With my daughter we've used RIE techniques from birth.

PREGNANCY

-By eating a healthy diet I won't get morning sickness: WRONG. I ate extremely healthy WAPF diet for several years before and during first pregnancy. Had rather bad morning sickness and nausea. (But after the sixteen week mark, pregnancy was lovely and no issues. Second pregnancy I was eating a Ray Peat inspired diet and still suffered horrible morning sickness. In hindsight it was more fear/stress/suppressed emotions related.

-By having my baby at home, where I feel safe, I will have a complication-free birth: RIGHT and WRONG. Both planned home births. First transfer to hospital after twenty-five hour labor. Second straightforward fast home birth. Well ... "free birth" as midwife didn't arrive in time!

-By having my baby at home I will have a peaceful birth: RIGHT Second birth was blissful, intense, but freaking amazing. Third stage not so much though ;) Ina May Gaskins's work helped immensely with this. As did hypnobirthing. Once I surrendered and allowed the process, it was much less painful/horrific.

-By having my baby at home I will have a fast birth: RIGHT and WRONG First - twenty-seven hours hospital transfer, forceps delivery. Second - forty-five min of active labour. (Roslyn updated her post because of Sarah's response here and in the last question. The fast birth isn't just from having the baby at home, but from studying birth psychology, which Sarah had done for her second baby.)

BABY

-By eating a WAPF diet I will have a baby that does not spit up. RIGHT

-By eating a WAPF diet I will have a baby that never gets cradle cap, eye infections, or other illnesses. RIGHT (There were mild snotty noses.)

-I don't need to hire a lactation consultant as breast feeding is natural and easy. WRONG WRONG WRONG haha. Breastfeeding is not natural and easy in western society (not exposed to it often enough, not the support, and our health will never be as good as hunter gathers despite our best efforts). First didn't get enough milk for the first six weeks! Tongue tie diagnosed at three years old when his sister's was diagnosed by an IBCLC. Oh the hindsight! My daughter's was revised at six days old and rarely any issues (a few bouts of mastitis though).

-By eating a WAPF diet and nursing until my child is three, he/she will not get cavities. UNSURE No cavities here, but we no longer eat WAPF, and do include raw cane sugar in our diet. Limited grains and no beans or indigestible foods (leafy greens, etc). No fermented foods anymore either. So cannot attribute his healthy teeth completely to WAPF diet. My first cleans his teeth once a day if I'm lucky, so not sure what it is. I have also read children with ties are more likely to get cavities. So far not the case here.

-By following Baby-Led Weaning I will have a baby that does not choke on food, regardless of the size presented i.e. I will not have to cut anything into baby-sized portions. RIGHT

-By following RIE techniques I will have a secure and respectful relationship with my child. RIGHT I have a brilliant relationship with my daughter. With my son I followed attachment parenting - baby-wearing, never allowing him to cry, never met my needs, etc. (You know the drill.) Not the best first two years for either of us. I somewhat feel cheated by AP as all the "promises" (for lack of a better word) never eventuated for us. Although I often wonder if I completely misinterpreted the concept of attachment parenting or didn't implement the techniques correctly. Or has the popular version of the attachment parenting model misrepresented the whole attachment theory?! Either way, my AP raised child is still rather insecure and is anxious often. This furthers solidifies my belief in RIE

-By following RIE techniques I will have a self-confident baby. RIGHT

-By following RIE techniques my baby will develop good communication and cooperation skills at a very young age. RIGHT

TODDLER

-By feeding my child whatever I am eating, I will have a child who enjoys flavorful food, including fish, sushi, and spicy foods. RIGHT

-By never having an opinion about whether or what my son eats when meals are presented to him, I will raise a "good eater." RIGHT. I did not to this with my son, unfortunately, and he is very picky. I am doing this with my daughter, and she is a brilliant eater.

-By inviting my son into the bathroom with me, discussing what is interesting about poop and pee, and allowing my son to spend time naked, I will have a child that is a) not afraid of toilets b) not afraid of pooping c) potty trains himself with ease. RIGHT

-There is no "no" phase for respectfully raise children. UNSURE My daughter definitely says, "No" often, ha!

-By raising my child respectfully, he will not throw tantrums. RIGHT  (Well depends of your view, really. She shows strong emotions which most of society would class as a tantrum, I guess?
My son never "tantrumed," he suppressed. He is beginning to show his emotions now, which I am delighted with.

-By never hitting my son, I will have a child that never hits. RIGHT so far. I mean there was some investigation early on, but nothing that was an intentional, "I want to hurt you" hit that I can recall.

-By focusing on creating a secure attachment and respecting his needs, I will have a child who never protests when I drop him off somewhere or have a sitter come. RIGHT Maybe. My son always protested, and he was extremely upset in these situations from about eighteen months old, but he was not raised the RIE way. I have not yet tried with my daughter.

-By not engaging in helicopter parenting and having a secure attachment, my child will choose to sleep in his own room RIGHT I assume. My son does not like to sleep alone which confirms this. Yet to find out with my daughter.

-By inviting my son to life with me, I will have a child quite advanced for his age in the study of real life. RIGHT I think so. I haven't compared much, and I am not sure where other children his age are at to be honest.

PRESCHOOL

-By eating a WAPF diet, we won't get colds. WRONG Always mild though, no more than two to three times a year (if that) and nothing lasting more than three or four days.

-By eating a WAPF diet, I will have a child who is not overly freckled despite a lot of time in the sun without sunscreen RIGHT Although we no longer eat WAPF, no freckles still.

-By eating adult food from a young age and having absolute authority about what goes in and what does not go in to his mouth, I will have a child who is an "adventurous eater," willing to try new things. RIGHT so far with my daughter. Also confirmed with my son's lack of experimentation.

-Children allowed to freely choose will choose to wipe their noses. With a tissue? WRONG well sometimes he does. With his t-shirt, hand, or nearest towel? He even used my dress once :o

-Children allowed to freely choose will choose to clothe themselves around the age of 5. RIGHT

-If I am not violent and threatening, my son won't play games in which he uses threats and pretend violence. WRONG

-If I raise my child in reality, he will not get nightmares. WRONG somewhat. While not always completely raised in reality, he never had a nightmare (that I am aware of) until he saw a picture of a skeleton in a library book. He has the odd bad dream about skeletons now.

-Because we don't watch other types of television, my son will enjoy documentaries. RIGHT Although he has been exposed to some cartoons on TV when I had morning sickness, he enjoys documentaries.

-If I homeschool my child, he will make friends with people older and younger than he is, including teenagers and adults as well. RIGHT but he does not get along with children his same age, especially boys if they are boisterous. I am confused by this. Children who are not socialized at school generally prefer kids a little older than they are. A five-year-old, for example, will prefer playing with kids 6-9 or even older if the kid is interested in him. But they shouldn't be too picky. If there is no one else to play with a five-year-old generally is content to play with a three-year-old, for example.

-If I homeschool my child, and we are television free, he will happily play with girls in addition to boys. RIGHT

-By opting out of preschool and bringing my child to life with me, I will get along with him better, have more in common with him, and like him more than other parents with children the same age. RIGHT So many parents seem to detest their children and can't wait for the holidays to be over.

OVERALL

-Children raised with information and freedom will choose to eat healthy foods in addition to unhealthy foods. RIGHT (my son eats both now that I've implemented this.)

-Children raised to see their bodies as their responsibility will take good care of their bodies. RIGHT

-Children can be exposed to reality (including death and violence shown documentaries) and it will not make them anxious if they have competent parents and a secure attachment. RIGHT. My son is very curious about death, yet not anxious about it.

-Children who are brought to life with their parents rather than put in a room with other people their age will act more mature than their peers. RIGHT from what I have been told

-By doing the above, parenting will be easier, less stressful, and more fun. RIGHT the other way is waaaay harder and confusing. I enjoy parenting more thoroughly now (but we also now live in the country away from mainstream so that probably helps).

OTHER THINGS I LEARNED

-Diet makes a big difference. RIGHT as does amount of screen time/quality of show.

-Bentonite clay poultices can cure impetigo. Essential oils made it worse.

-Four-year-olds are competent to purchase items on their own.

My Bibliography by Author 2010 - 2018

This reflects what I read from 2009 – 2022.

I have given each book a star rating on a 5-point scale. Five stars means I think most people would benefit from reading it. It does not necessarily mean I agree with it.

Also, due to my newfound love of reading banned or politically incorrect books, this bibliography no longer includes everything I read. I would be happy to tell you all about these books in person should you visit me at my farm in Nicaragua.
